Revelation 13

1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. 2a Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion...

  1. What John Saw first? From where he saw?

    1. 1a Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast

        • (David Guzik) In Revelation 12, John’s vision mainly had in heaven in view. Now the scene of his vision shifts to the earth, and in his vision he stood on the sand of the sea.

  2. From Where this beast came?

  1. How this beast is described?

    1. 1c having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. 2a Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion.

        • In Rev 12:3 Dragon also described similar to this beast with minor difference

            • Rev 12:3 - And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.

What these sign means?

Compare this passage with Dan 2,7,8 and Rev 17:1-16. This beast sign are explained in Daniel 2, 7, & 8 and in Rev 17:1-16 .

    • Dan 2:31-36 - 31 "You, O king, were watching; and behold, a great image! This great image, whose splendor was excellent, stood before you; and its form was awesome. 32 This image's head was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. 36 "This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king.

    • Explanation for this dream is in

    • Dan 2:37-45 - 37 You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; 38 and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all--you are this head of gold. 39 But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; then another, a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. 41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold--the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure."

    • Dan 7:1-8 - 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head while on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream, telling the main facts. 2 Daniel spoke, saying, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other. 4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings. I watched till its wings were plucked off; and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and a man's heart was given to it. 5 And suddenly another beast, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. And they said thus to it: 'Arise, devour much flesh!' 6 After this I looked, and there was another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. 7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.

  • Explanation for those signs are given in the following verses:

    • Dan 7:15-28 - 15 "I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit within my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. 16 I came near to one of those who stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things: 17 'Those great beasts, which are four, are four kings which arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.' 19 Then I wished to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its nails of bronze, which devoured, broke in pieces, and trampled the residue with its feet; 20 and the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, before which three fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth which spoke pompous words, whose appearance was greater than his fellows. 21 I was watching; and the same horn was making war against the saints, and prevailing against them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom. 23 "Thus he said: 'The fourth beast shall be A fourth kingdom on earth, Which shall be different from all other kingdoms, And shall devour the whole earth, Trample it and break it in pieces. 24 The ten horns are ten kings Who shall arise from this kingdom. And another shall rise after them; He shall be different from the first ones, And shall subdue three kings. 25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand For a time and times and half a time. 26 'But the court shall be seated, And they shall take away his dominion, To consume and destroy it forever. 27 Then the kingdom and dominion, And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.' 28 "This is the end of the account. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly troubled me, and my countenance changed; but I kept the matter in my heart."

    • (Walvoord) “The parallel references in Daniel 7:7-8, 2, it is clear that the revived Roman Empire is in view . . . The seven heads and ten horns refer to the original ten kingdoms of which three were subdued by the little horn of Daniel 7:8, who is to be identified with the world ruler of the great tribulation who reigns over the revived Roman Empire.”

    • Dan 8:3-12 - 3 Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and there, standing beside the river, was a ram which had two horns, and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. 4 I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward, so that no animal could withstand him; nor was there any that could deliver from his hand, but he did according to his will and became great. 5 And as I was considering, suddenly a male goat came from the west, across the surface of the whole earth, without touching the ground; and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. 6 Then he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing beside the river, and ran at him with furious power. 7 And I saw him confronting the ram; he was moved with rage against him, attacked the ram, and broke his two horns. There was no power in the ram to withstand him, but he cast him down to the ground and trampled him; and there was no one that could deliver the ram from his hand. 8 Therefore the male goat grew very great; but when he became strong, the large horn was broken, and in place of it four notable ones came up toward the four winds of heaven. 9 And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land. 10 And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered.

  • Explanation for those signs are given in the following verses:

    • Dan 8:20-25 - 20 The ram which you saw, having the two horns--they are the kings of Media and Persia. 21 And the male goat is the kingdom of Greece. The large horn that is between its eyes is the first king. 22 As for the broken horn and the four that stood up in its place, four kingdoms shall arise out of that nation, but not with its power. 23 "And in the latter time of their kingdom, When the transgressors have reached their fullness, A king shall arise, Having fierce features, Who understands sinister schemes. 24 His power shall be mighty, but not by his own power; He shall destroy fearfully, And shall prosper and thrive; He shall destroy the mighty, and also the holy people. 25 "Through his cunning He shall cause deceit to prosper under his rule; And he shall exalt himself in his heart. He shall destroy many in their prosperity. He shall even rise against the Prince of princes; But he shall be broken without human means.

        1. a ram which had two horns (8:3) → the kings of Media and Persia. (8:20) - Medo-Persian rule after Babylon

        2. a male goat(8:5a) → the kingdom of Greece. (8:21a)

      1. the goat had a notable horn between his eyes(8:5b) → the first king of Greece. (8:21b) - the Alexander the Great

        1. the large horn was broken, and in place of it four notable ones came up(8:8b)four kingdoms shall arise out of that nation, but not with its power (8:22b) - the four Generals who divided the Alexander's Empire.

    • Dan 9:26-27 - 26 "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate."

    • Dan 11:36-45 - 36 "Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done. 37 He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all. 38 But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things. 39 Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain. 40 "At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. 44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him.

    • We will continue to find out more details about the 7 Heads and 10 Horns after going through another important incident happens to this beast in Rev 13:2b,3a.

2b The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. 3a And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed.

  1. Who is this dragon?

    1. Here this Dragon is Satan. We already discussed about Dragon in Rev 12:3,4a in Who is this dragon? topic for more details read this.

        • Rev 12:9 - So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

  2. What the dragon gave to this beast?

    1. 2b The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

    2. Who gave this authority/power to Dragon/Satan?

        • Everything is going on as per God's time table and plan (Dan 9:27, Revelation). So, God gave this authority to Satan and he delegates that to the Beast/Antichrist.

        • God allow this until Satan bind and thrown in bottomless pit as in Rev 19:20, and later thrown into the lake of fire as in Rev 20:10

            • (Warren Wiersbe) Satan can do nothing without God's permission (see Job 1-2; Luke 22:31-32), so "the beast's'' authority is delegated, not inherent. It will last for three-and-a-half years, the last half of the Tribulation.

            • Luke 22:31-32 - 31 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."

  1. What happened to the beast head?

    1. 3a And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded,

      • Does the beast has the wound in all his heads?

        • No. Only one of his head is mortally wounded.

  1. What happened to this deadly wound?

    1. 3b and his deadly wound was healed.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) First, there will be wonder (Rev. 13:3). Certainly a terrified world will wonder at Antichrist's power and his sudden rise to international fame and authority. But mankind will also wonder at the healing of his "wound.''

      • (Warren Wiersbe) What is this "wound"?

        • John does not explain it, but perhaps what he later wrote (Rev. 17:9-13) can help interpret the symbolism. This "wound" must be important, because John mentioned it three times (Rev. 13:3, 12, 14), including the fact that it was sword-inflicted.

            • Rev 13:12 - And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

            • Rev 13:14 - And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.

        • (David Guzik) This is truly an Antichrist, who even imitates Jesus in His death and resurrection. The world will believe this, and it will add tremendously to his fame and power.

    1. Who healed this deadly wound?

        • Satan would have healed this deadly wound. This is one more reason they worshiped the Satan - Rev 13:4

        • Is it possible that Satan will (with God's permission) resuscitate (re·sus·ci·tate - to revive, esp. from apparent death or from unconsciousness) a man from the dead? If Satan has power to give life to a dead idol (Rev. 13:15), could he not also give life to a deadly wounded head?

    2. What this really means? or What is really happening here?

        • This beast rule this earth for initial 3½ years of last 7 year period by his own authority and rule the rest of the 3½ years with Satan's authority after he resuscitated (revived) from his deadly wound

    3. Who might have caused this deadly wound to this beast?

        • Even though it is not given clearly in this Rev 13 but few clues are in Daniel 2nd and 7th chapter.

            • Dan 2:41-43 - 41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.

            • Dan 7:8 I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.

            • Dan 7:20,24 - 20 and the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, before which three fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth which spoke pompous words, whose appearance was greater than his fellows.

        • Ten horns are kings and the little horn is the Beast in Rev 13:1-3. It seams that there is always friction between the Beast/little horn/feet with the 10 other kings/toes/horns. When the Beast/little Horn comes up ie back after healing of the deadly wound it subdues the 3 kings. These 3 kings might have real trouble makers to the Beast position and authority during their initial 3.5 years of last 7 year period. Once this Beast comes back with Satan's authority he subdues these three kings. So, these 3 kings might have tried to kill the Beast by stabbing this Beast on the head with the sword.

            • (Warren Wiersbe) In his night vision, Daniel saw "the beast" as the fourth and final empire (Dan. 7:19-28). There, as in John's vision, is the same image of the ten horns with the added revelation that "the beast" must defeat three of the kings to gain control.

What is the 7 heads, 10 Horns and Crowns means?

    • Rev 17:3,8-12,16 - 3 So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns......8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9 Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. 10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. 11 And the beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition. 12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful." 15 Then he said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth."

    • Let us go through the verses 10,11 and find out the details about the 7 heads.

        • Rev 17:10 - There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. 11 - And the beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition.

        • Eight kings

            1. Five have fallen: Five World Empires before John’s day : Greece (V King), Medo-Persia (IV King), Babylonia (III King), (as in Daniel 2:31-45;7:4-7; and 8:3-8,20-22) other two prior to these are Assyria (II King), Egypt (I King)

            2. One is World Empire during John’s day which is Rome (VI King)

            3. The Other yet come for a short time: Final Revived Roman World Empire by The Antichrist (VII King) (with own authority as a Peacemaker/Conqueror - Rev 6:2) - initial 3½ years of last 7 year period

                • Simple and easy answer is The Antichrist/The Beast rules last 7 years.

                • Since Rev 17:11 talking about the 8th king the Beast. Compare Rev 17:11 with Rev 17:8.

                  • Rev 17:8 - The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

                • As we saw in Rev 13:3 this beast rule this earth for initial 3½ years of last 7 year period by his own authority and rule the rest of the 3½ years with Satan's authority after he resuscitated (revived) from his deadly wound.

            4. Eighth is the Beast: Final Revived Roman World Empire by The Antichrist (with Satan authority -Rev 13:2b) - Last 3 ½ Years - Rev 11-18

    • (Warren Wiersbe) The symbolic description of "the beast" enables us to learn something about his origin and character.

        • God does not see him as a man, made in the divine image, but as a wild animal, under the control of Satan.

    • Who is this beast and What he does?

        1. He is a man not refers to Kingdom or Empire but leading The kingdom or Empire.

            • (Warren Wiersbe) He is a man (Rev. 13:18); but he is energized from hell, for he comes out of the pit (Rev. 11:7: 17:8).

            • (Warren Wiersbe) If "the beast" ruled as one of the seven kings, was slain, and then raised up again, he could rule as the eighth king. If, on the other hand, the image is seen representing kingdoms rather man individuals, we would have the reemergence of a "dead kingdom" on the world scene. However, it would be difficult to understand how a kingdom could be slain by a sword. It is best, I think, to apply this prophecy to individual persons.

            • (David Guzik) Since the beasts of Daniel 7 represented empires more than specific men, some have thought that the beast of Revelation 13 is not a person, but a government or a cultural system.

                • Many believe the beast is a broad picture of totalitarian governments, especially the totalitarian states of the 20th century. For example, Mounce writes: “The beast has always been, and will always be, in a final intensified manifestation, the deification of secular authority” (Mounce)

                • But others see the beast as a person, specifically the Antichrist - the final Satanic dictator who leads the world in rebellion against God.

                • Some (like David Hocking) combine the approaches and say that the beast is a modern, world totalitarian government, but the one head that has ten horns is specifically the Antichrist - the leader of this beast of a final satanic dictatorship. But with any empire, especially brief empires, the government is almost totally identified with the ruler. When we think of Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, the figures of Hitler as an individual and Nazi Germany as a state are virtually the same.

            • (David Guzik) All the indications in Revelation 13 are that the beast is a man, a human individual, though he is closely identified with his world-dominating government.

                1. The Beast is worshipped as a god; but people never worship an empire as such; neither do they make a succession of emperors into an object of religious devotion. The paying of divine homage to kings has been a common thing in the world’s history, but it has always been rendered to individuals.” (Seiss)

                2. An image is set up of the beast, and the whole world is commanded to worship it. How can one set up an image of an empire or a government? This hasn’t been done in the past, but men have often bowed down to an image of a political ruler.

                3. This Beast also has a proper name - a name expressive of a particular number, and that number ‘a number of a man;’ which cannot be conceived except on the idea of an individual person.” (Seiss)

                4. “This beast is finally damned. He goes to perdition, into the lake of fire, where he continues to exist and suffer, after passing from this earthly scene (Revelation 17:11; 20:10), which cannot be true of systems of government.” (Seiss)

                5. The antichrist is also called the son of perdition (2 Thessalonians 2:3), as was Judas (John 17:12). Judas was a man, not a system or a government, so it follows that the antichrist will also be a man, not a system or a government. (Seiss)

                6. With all this in mind, we agree with Seiss: “We would therefore greatly err from the Scriptures, as well as from the unanimous conviction and teaching of the early Church, were we to fail to recognize this Beast as a real person, though one in whom the political power of the world is finally concentrated and represented.”

                7. The beast is not an ordinary man. He is called the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit (Revelation 11:7, 17:8), and ordinary men do not come from there. “One who hails from that place must either be a dead man brought up again from the dead, or some evil spirit which takes possession of a living man . . . In either case, the Beast, as a person, is an extraordinary and supernatural being.” (Seiss)

        1. (Warren Wiersbe) The seven heads represent seven mountains (Rev. 17:9); and since Rome was built on seven hills, this must be a veiled reference to that powerful city (see Rev. 17:18). It would be a most meaningful allusion in John's day!

        • The ten horns represent ten kingdoms (Dan. 7:24; Rev. 17:12).

          • The seven heads also seven kings or kingdoms (Rev. 17:10). Antichrist or "the beast" is one of these seven kings (Rev. 17:11) but he is also the eighth. Apparently, he reigns twice; but how can this be? The suggestion has been made that "the beast" will be a European leader who will form a ten-nation federation (Rev. 17:12), but he slain in the process. Revelation 11:7 and 17:8 state that "the beast" will ascend out of the abyss.

          • It appears that "the beast" will head a "United States of Europe," a revived Roman Empire, before taking over as world dictator. All nations will no doubt admire and thank him for the "peace" he has achieved, little realizing the sorrow and destruction he will bring to the world.

          • The three animals named in Revelation 13:2 remind us of the four beasts Daniel saw in his dream (Dan. 7): a lion (Babylon), a bear (Media-Persia), a leopard (Greece), and a "terrible beast" (the Antichrist). John saw these animals, or kingdoms, in reverse order since he was looking back, while Daniel was looking ahead.

          • The final world empire will be rooted in all the previous empires and unite in one their evil and power.

          • Added to the ferocity of these beasts will be Satan's own power, throne, and authority!

3b And all the world marveled and followed the beast. 4 So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

  1. What is the outcome of this miraculous healing to the beast?

    1. 3c And all the world marveled and followed the beast. 4 So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

        • They worship both dragon and the beast.

    2. How the earth dwellers know the dragon/Satan?

        • Is the dragon/Satan physically exist like the beast/the Antichrist?

            • No, dragon/Satan is a evil spirit. He is not a visible character exist physically like the beast/Antichrist.

            • He may take/appear as a human form or appear like angel to humans. But here in this passage there is no indication or any related reference available that says that Satan physically appear.

            • But Satan give authority to the beast/the Antichrist and work through him. Satan may posses/enter into humans (that are not believing in Jesus Christ like Legion) and control them or do whatever he want through them.

                • The beast is not an ordinary man.

                • It may be that Satan himself takes possession of this man, and this is what makes him exceptional. This was the case with Judas, who was possessed by Satan (John 13:27). (David Guzik)

                • Luke 8:27-33 - 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!" 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. 30 Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. 32 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned.

                • Rev 16:13-14 - 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

        • Are they worshiping Satan unknowingly?

            • It is possible that they may worship Satan unknowingly by worshiping the beast.

            • As people worship this beast and bow down before his government, it may be that they do not know they are bowing down to Satan himself; but it is worship of Satan none the less. They clearly worship both the beast and the dragon, but their worship of the dragon may be unknowing. (David Guzik)

                • Though Satan worship becomes more and more popular each year, it is still only a tiny fraction of people who openly worship Satan. But this is because more people expect Satan to appear with ugliness and horror. This is wrong, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)

            • In Rev 13:4 since it highlights that they worship both dragon and the beast so they may be worshiping Satan knowingly as per their own desire and with understanding.

            • Note: Nowhere in the Bible says that Satan comes as a physical character like the beast/Antichrist. (Also after Nova's flood God didn't permit the evil Spirit to interact with humans physically as referred in Gen 6.)

                • Satan may appear to many like angel of light. He is not omnipresent so can possess to one person ie here he possess the beast/Antichrist and work through him.

        • How then they know Satan and worship him?

            • Even though dragon/Satan is not a visible character exist physically like the beast/Antichrist but the beast may always acknowledge Satan/Dragon as God/Boss/Guru like how Jesus refers to the Father.

                • John 5:19,20 - 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

                • John 5:30 - I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

                • John 12:49 - For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

    3. Application: Jesus expects this integrity with us.

    4. Most of the time believers follow Jesus Christ by ritually keeping the Dos and Don'ts (laws), extremely hurting themselves by poking literally with nails and hanging in the cross for a while, keeping externally clean by ceremonial washing, staying single without marrying while they are having lust in their flesh, etc. Instead believers in Christ has to have intimate love relationship with Him. If we really develop this love relationship then we really have the healthy communication with God and grow in the Grace of God. We plead our issues, problems and feelings then He will lead us through His Holy Spirit dynamically in each situation and circumstance:

        • John 3:30 - He must increase, but I must decrease.

        • 1 Corinthians 11:1 -Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

        • Gal 5:25 - 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

        • John 16:13-14 - 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

        • Psalm 37:23 - The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.

        • Prov 3:5 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

  2. How the earth dwellers worshiped the beast?

    1. 4b and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

    2. Why they are worship saying "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

        • As we saw in Rev 13:3 under topic Who might have caused this deadly wound to this beast? 3 out of 10 kings/horns troubled/challenged him and might have stabbed him on the head. This beast/Antichrist miraculously healed and subdue those 3 kings. So, here they are acknowledging that and worshiping him by saying "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?".

        • Not only that in future he is also going to war with saints and win as in Rev 13:7.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Not only will there be wonder, but there will also be worship (Rev. 13:4).

            • Worship is the one thing Satan has always wanted (Matt. 4:8-10), and he will receive it through "the beast."

            • The second "beast," described in the last half of this chapter, will organize and promote the worship of Antichrist, making it the official religion of the world!

            • The world will be amazed at the power of the beast, and will believe he is so mighty that he cannot be conquered. For a time, the beast will look like a tremendous “winner.”

            • This leads this beast to blaspheme God and persecute saints or God’s people. For a short time these saints will be appeared to be complete losers.

    3. Application & Warning: If we didn't keep God first by worship and follow Him then we will follow someone else.

        • We normally thing worship means singing praise songs but following any one is the act of worshiping that person. If we impressed on one person then we start with praising and then naturally follow their foot steps.

        • For more details and for better understanding read article about Worshiping our God that covers...

            • What is Worship means?

            • How often we need to Worship?

            • Why we need to Worship?

            • What Posture we need to use to worship?

            • Is this Posture is must/mandatory/important? Why today's church and we are not following if this or especially the fall down posture is must? Is it possible to worship continuously with these positions?

            • How we should not worship?

            • How to worship continuously?

            • Have you learnt to cast your crowns at the Savior’s feet already and experiencing the Lordship our Lord Jesus Christ? Is Jesus is just a friend or Lord?

5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.

  1. What was given to the beast/Antichrist?

    1. 5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months.

        • The beast was given mouth to speak and authority to rule this earth.

  2. How long the Antichrist was given authority?

    1. 5b and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months.

  1. Who gave this authority?

  1. What type of mouth was given to the Antichrist?

    1. 5a And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies,

    2. What great things he spoke?

        • In NIV this is clearly translated that he speaks proud words.

            • NIV: Rev 13:5 - The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months.

        • So, he talks about

            1. His plans

            2. His boss Satan's plans

            3. Great things about himself.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Almost all dictators have risen to power by controlling people with their words. Some of us can recall when Adolf Hitler was rising to power, and know now how he mesmerized huge crowds with his speeches.

        • This is exactly opposite to what the John the Baptist did.

            • John 3:30 - He must increase, but I must decrease.

        • So, this leads to him to next face in his speech.... i.e. to blaspheme God.

    1. What is Blasphemy/Blaspheme means?

        • The root word for the Blaspheme is Blasphemous.

            • Greek: blasphēmos (βλάσφημος - G989). It is derivative of blaptō (βλάπτω - G984 means to hurt, harm, injure to hurt) and phēmē (φήμη - G5345 means fame, report)

        • Blasphemy means

            1. To speak reproachfully, calumniate, to be evil spoken of, reviled, railed at

            2. Slanderous, reproachful, abusive, profanity, cursing, swearing; sacrilege, impiety.

            3. Theology: the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God.

            4. Irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred, priceless, etc.

  1. Whom the beast/Antichrist blaspheming?

    1. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven

        • Daniel also heard "the beast's" blasphemous words.

            • Dan 7:25 - He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand For a time and times and half a time

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Satan will make "the beast" a great orator, whose addresses will blaspheme God, His name, His tabernacle (heaven), and the saints in heaven. Since Satan will have recently been cast out of heaven, this blasphemy is to be expected.

        • (David Guzik) As much as anything, this beast is a man who speaks against God and everything God stands for (His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven).

            • There are many examples of Roman Emperors blaspheming God in this way; but it can’t be said they fulfilled these prophecies, even if they did prefigure their fulfillment.

    2. What is "His tabernacle" means?

        • It means temple of God in heave which John saw in Rev 11:19. God's dwelling place which is heaven as translated in NIV.

        • Rev 11:19 Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail.

        • NIV: Rev 13:6 - He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven

        • For more details read Heaven Vs Tabernacle/Temple of God in Earth topic.

    3. Who are those who dwell in heaven?

        • God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, Angels/Cherub/Seraphim/Four Living Creatures, OT Believers, NT Believers/Church who raptured/taken up to heaven just before the last 7 year period, remnant believers who died and Martyrs during this last 7 year period.

  1. Why the beast/Antichrist blasphemes God?

    1. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.

        1. Satan is working in/through him. So, by his nature/character he lifts his self high and slanders/blasphemes others especially who has real authority over him i.e. God. So, we see these in...

            • Revelation 13:1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name.

            • Revelation 17:3 - So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

            • Not all things are happening as per his plan and he also thrown out of the heaven Rev 12:7-12. So, he start with blaspheming God and his followers,

              • later he tries wipe out Israelites but God will protect them, and he tries to make war with saints as in Rev 13:7.

            • Not only these...

        2. He blaspheme due to pain while God pours out His wrath

            • Revelation 16:11 - They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.

        3. Why he is doing this to them?

        4. He wants his followers to keep doing the same.

            • Revelation 16:21 - And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

        5. Because he does not want to repent and not want them to repent and not want them to think of repentance.

            • Revelation 16:9 - And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

            • Note: God's intention is not to punish them but to give them opportunity to repent.

            • James 5:11 - 10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. 11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord--that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

Application:

    1. Who is that person that Jesus warns not to blasphemy against?

        • Which sin is unforgiveable sin?

        • God forgive everything except He will not forgive the blasphemy against His Holy Spirit.

            • Matt 12:31-32 - 31 "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

        • Why? and How?

          • It is easy to interpret this as one more unforgiveable sin that not allow one to enter into the Kingdom of God or Heaven. But this will cause one theological conflict. Let us see this in detail.

        • Is there any other unforgiveable sin referred by God in the Bible?

          • Unbelief in Jesus is "the unforgiveable sin" that never allow any unbeliever of Jesus Christ to enter into Heaven.

              • Acts 4:12 - 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.' 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

              • John 3:16,18 - 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

              • John 8:24 - 21 Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come." 22 So the Jews said, "Will He kill Himself, because He says, 'Where I go you cannot come'?" 23 And He said to them, "You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."

              • Throughout the Bible it teaches that unbelief in Jesus/God never anyone to enter into heaven. So, unbelief in Jesus is "the unforgiveable sin"

          • If we say that blasphemy against His Holy Spirit is one more unforgiveable sin then we are adding one more condition to Good News or Gospel (Believe in Jesus - John 3:16,...., Just shall live by Faith - Rom 1:17, Obtain God's Righteousness apart from keeping the law - Rom 3:20).

              1. In other words it leads to say that we need to believe in Jesus and not blasphemy against His Holy Spirit.

              2. If anyone teaches that you need to believe in Jesus + do, do, anything to enter into heaven then they are cult they are not true Christians. So, be careful in interpreting the passage like these.

          • The reference in Matt 12:31 and Mark 3:28 easily lead us to interpret this as an one more unforgiveable sin. The real in-depth context to interpret "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is in Luke 12:8-10.

              • Luke 12:10 - 8 "Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. 9 But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.

          • God keeps on providing opportunity to everyone to give up their unbelief in God and Jesus Christ and believe in Him.

              • Acts 17:24-27 - 24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

              • Rev 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

          • God foreknew whether we choose Him or not.

              • 1 Peter 1:2 - 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

          • So, God is giving one final opportunity in due time by convicting them through His Holy Spirit.

              • John 16:8,9 - 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

              • For some they believe Jesus or deny their self and choose God by their own free will and confess their sin and accept Jesus as their Savior.

                  • Rom 10:9,10 - 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

              • For some even after His Holy Spirit's conviction instead of believe and confess they blaspheme against Holy Spirit by placing either themselves or others/created things in the place of God. From that point on God might honor their desires and give them debased mind. So, they will continue suppress the truth by their selfishness till their death

                  • Rom 1:18-21 - 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

          • So, every unbeliever in Christ who goes to Hell might have blasphemed against the Holy Spirit at least once some point in time.

  1. Is it ok to blaspheme Satan for what he does to us and how he trap us?

    1. He is not a sacred or holy person to blaspheme him (read the meaning for blaspheme). But we may curse or blame him for the troubles/issues that he may cause. Also we do not want to follow his footsteps.

        • Not all the issues and problems in our lives are caused by him.

            • Some believers in Christ always blame Satan/evils spirit for all their problems/troubles/issues instead of realizing their own sins.

            • If we practice this then it will lead us to always blame others for our silly mistakes. It become our attitude and it keeps us in self righteousness.

                • If you closely notice in the above passages (Rev 16:9,11,21) Satan is training them to blaspheme God for all the issues and pain that they go through. This attitude never allow them to think of the repentance. Instead of repenting and seeking God's help they always stay in the self righteous state.

        • At the same time do not underestimate Satan's schemes, strategies towards believers in Christ. When we grow spiritually Satan will always look for opportunities to tempt, trap or devour us.

            • Luke 4:13 - Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time

          • 1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour

            • Eph 6:10-11 - 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles (NIV: schemes, NLT: strategies and tricks) of the devil

        • How to identify and How to handle? or What we need to do?

            • Prayerfully discern this by the help of the Holy Spirit.

                • 1 Cor 12:10 - 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

            • If the Lord convicts us by gently pointing us that these issues/problems that we face are due to your sins then confess that to our Lord. May the God almighty cleanse us and strengthen us by filling us by His Holy Spirit.

                • 1 John 1:9-10 - 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

            • Otherwise if those issues/problems are caused by Satan then....

                • Draw near to God and resist the devil and he will flee.

                  • James 4:7-8 - 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

                  • 1 Peter 5:9 - 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

                  • Eph 6:10-11 - 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil

                  • Luke 4:1-7 - 1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." 4 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' "5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours." 8 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.' " 9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,' 11 "and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' " 12 And Jesus answered and said to him, "It has been said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.' " 13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

                • Is it ok to rebuke the devil/Satan?

                  • Sure it is ok to rebuke the devil/Satan if Holy Spirit leads.

                  • Acts 13:10 - 6 Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, "O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? 11 And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time." And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

                  • Acts 16:18- 16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour. 19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.

                  • Warning: Acts 19:16 - 11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.

                  • Allow God to rebuke him if Holy Spirit didn't lead you to rebuke then . He is always available to help us.

                  • Zec 3:2 - 1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, "The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?"

                  • Jude 9 - Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

                  • John 17:15 - (Jesus) I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.

                  • Luke 22:31-32 - 31 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."

7a It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them.

  1. What was granted to the Antichrist?

    1. 7a It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them.

  2. Whom the Antichrist war against?

  3. 7b war with the saints

  4. Who are these saints?

    1. They are remnant believers in Christ who accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior during this Great Tribulation period i.e. last 7 year period just before Jesus 2nd coming. In these group God did not allow the Israelite believers to overcome by the beast because Israelites believers were protected by God in the wilderness Rev 12:6,13-17. We will see this in detail below.

        • (David Guzik) Who are these saints who are overcome by the beast? Various views of the timing of the rapture will determine who these persecuted ones are. Those who believe in a pre-tribulation rapture believe that these saints are God’s people who come to Christ after the church has been raptured. Those who believe in a post-tribulation rapture believe that these saints are God’s people who are on the earth before the final rapture, including what we think of today as the “church.”

        • Rev 13:9 makes it clear that Church is not hear at this time because the same phrase used in Rev 2 & 3 refers to the churches but Church is not referred here

            • Rev 13:9 - If anyone has an ear, let him hear.

            • Rev 2:7 - He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." '

        • Following list explains this in detail...

  1. What is really happening during this war? or What are all the events referred in Revelation 11, 12 & Dan 9:27 (Matt 24:15) happens in this war?

  2. List out all the items in order done by the beast/Antichrist, the beast/false prophet and Satan referred in Revelation 11 & 12.

    1. During this war the Beast/Antichrist

        1. Break that covenant (peace treaty) with Israelites which he establish for 7 Years as we saw in Rev 6:2. Rev 13:7 is middle of the last 7 year period.

            • Dan 9:27 - Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate."

            • NIV: Dan 9:27 - He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."

            • NLT: Dan 9:27 - 27 He will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. Then as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the end that has been decreed is poured out on this defiler."

        2. He will start with blaspheming our God and His followers.

            • Read Rev 13:5-6 notes for more details.

        3. Make war against the Two witness in Jerusalem, and kill them.

            • Till this point the beast/Antichrist and his followers were not allowed inside the temple.

                • Rev 11:2 - 1 Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, "Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. 2 But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.

          • Because these two witnesses are are stumbling blocks to him.

            • One more reason this has to happen at this point because the 3rd woe will start after this. In other words the events specified in Rev 11:15 till Rev 12 will happen after the two witnesses death and resurrection.

                • Rev 11:7 - 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth." 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. 6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire. 7 When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

            • But these two witness resurrect and taken up to heaven. This gives more opportunity for Jews/Israelites mass conversion.

                • Rev 11:11-13 - 11 Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here." And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them. 13 In the same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven.

                • Are these 144,000 sealed by angels in Rev 7:3-8? No. Read this topic in Rev 11:13 notes for more details.

        1. Enter into the temple and stop the sacrifice and offering, set up his image as idol and claim himself as god in the temple.

            • Rev 13:14b-15 - 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

            • 2 Thes 2:4b - 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

            • Matt 24:15 - "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand)

        2. Persecute Israelite believers either directly or through anti-Semitism and try to completely wipe them out but God protected them in a safe place.

          • What Jesus asked them to do when this happens?

            • Flee from Jerusalem....

                • Matt 11:16 - 15 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened.

            • Where?

                • Rev 12:6, 14--16 - 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days

                • 14 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.

        1. Make War with remnant gentile Saints since Satan and the beast/Antichrist could not wipe the Israelite believers so he rage war against remnant gentile Saints.

            • Rev 12:17 - And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

    1. How long this war will continue?

        • Remaining 3.5 years for last 7 year period. Until God taken up all believers (Rev 14:12-20 , Rev 18:4) and the beast/Antichrist, the False Prophet are thrown into the lake of fire.

            • Rev 18:4 - And I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues

  1. What is the outcome of this war? Who will win the war?

  2. 7a .... and to overcome them

    1. Antichrist won/overcome the saints.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Finally, there will be war (Rev. 13:7-10). God will permit Antichrist to war against His people ("wear out the saints," Dan. 7:25) and even to defeat some of them. John prophesied that some of the saints will be captured and some will be martyred. But because of their faith, they will have patience, or endurance (see Heb. 6:12; Rev. 1:9), and will not deny the Lord in spite of persecution and death.

        • (David Guzik) Overcome does not mean that the beast can overcome the faith of the saints, but that he can destroy their physical lives, and by all appearances defeat the cause of God’s people on this earth.

        • Matt 16:26 - 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

        • Luke 12:4-7 - 4 "And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  1. Why God protected Israel believers from the Satan/dragon (Rev 12:6,14,16,17) but allowed the Antichrist/beast to overcome this saints?

    1. Rev 12:6 - Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days

    2. Rev 12:14 - But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.

    3. Rev 12:16,17 - 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) True, some people will give their lives (Rev. 13:7), but others will be spared (Rev 12:6,14,16,17; see Acts 12 for an example of this principle).

        • Grace period for Gentiles will be fulfilled just before the Last 7 year period. Last 7 year period is the grace period for Israel (this is also called Jacob's Trouble - Jere 30:7)

            • Luke 21:24 - And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

            • Rom 11 - 1 I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin........ 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins." 28 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers..

            • (Warren Wiersbe) Satan has always hated the Jews because they are God's chosen people and the vehicle through which salvation came into the world. Satan would like to destroy the nation, particularly as the time draws near for the Messiah to return to earth to establish the promised kingdom. A Jewish remnant must be ready to receive Him and form the nucleus for the kingdom (Zech. 12:9-14:21; Rev. 1:7).

Application:

    1. Do not delay accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior if any of you have not accepted him Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord.

    2. As believers in Christ never compare yourself with other believers. God has unique plan and purpose for each. So, God may be leading each one uniquely. Some may end up as a Martyrs some may not.

        • Heb 12:2,3 - 1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

        • NLT: Heb 12:2,3 - 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish. He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward. Now he is seated in the place of highest honor beside God's throne in heaven. 3 Think about all he endured when sinful people did such terrible things to him, so that you don't become weary and give up.

  1. Live for Christ even if it cost your life.

7b And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

  1. What more authority given to the Antichrist?

    1. 7b And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.

  2. What did the earth dwellers do?

    1. 8a All who dwell on the earth will worship him,

        • By this time except war with saints most of the above listed events has been taken care by the beast/Antichrist so these might be few more reasons they are worshiping the beast saying "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

            • Rev 13:4 - So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

        • Some are voluntarily worship the beast/Antichrist.

        • Some are forced to worship the beast/Antichrist by force - Rev 13:11-17

      • (David Guzik) How will all who dwell on the earth . . . worship him?

        • It will probably be after the pattern of the worship demanded by the Roman Emperors in the days of the early church. There were times in the early church when all residents in the empire were required to burn a pinch of incense before a statue of Caesar and say, “Caesar is Lord.” Christians refused to do this and were persecuted because of it. The Romans saw it as an act of political allegiance, but the Christians rightly saw it as an act of religious worship. After the great and terrible totalitarian rulers of the 20th Century (Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao), it isn’t hard to imagine a dominating world leader demanding such a declaration of allegiance, tantamount to worship.

    1. Are the beast worshipers (the earth dwellers) names were in the Book of Life?

    2. 8b whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

    3. Why the beast worshipers (the earth dwellers) names were not in the Book of Life? Why it says/adds "from the foundation of the world" (also in Rev 17:8)?

        • The Book of Life article goes through the Bible and explains in detail what the Bible teach us about the Book of Life...

          1. What is Book of Life?

          2. In what basis God adds the names? What is the basic qualification/requirement needed to be added in that Book of Life?

          3. When our names are written in this Book of Life?

          4. How God add names in the Book of Life before the foundation of the world?

        • (David Guzik) This deeply meaningful title for Jesus reminds us that God’s plan of redemption was set in place before He even created the beings who would be redeemed. God wasn’t “surprised” by the fall of Adam or any other evidence of the fallen nature of man. God isn’t making it up as He goes along. It is all going according to plan.

            • God the Son had a relationship of love and fellowship with God the Father before the foundation of the world (John 17:24)

            • The work of Jesus was ordained before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20)

            • God chose His redeemed before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4)

            • Names are written in the Book of Life before the foundation of the world (Revelation 17:8)

            • The kingdom of heaven was prepared for the redeemed before the foundation of the world (Matthew 25:34)

        • (David Guzik) This final world dictator will demand and receive worship from the whole earth. But those who worship him pay the price: they are whose names have not been written in the Book of Life.

            • The Book of Life contains the names of all God’s redeemed (Revelation 20:15). The idea is that worshipping the beast and having your name in the Book of Life are mutually exclusive.

9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

  1. To whom this warning is for?

    1. 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear.

        • (David Guzik) This introduces a solemn word of warning, meant to capture the attention of all who hear.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) The world's population will be divided: those who are saved, with their names in God's book, will not submit to "the beast"; those who are lost—the earth-dwellers—will worship "the beast" and do his bidding. Note that Revelation 13:9 applies this truth to "any man," no matter in which age he may live.

        • This verse makes it clear that Church is not hear at this time because the same phrase used in Rev 2 & 3 refers to the churches but Church is not referred here. For more details read Who are these saints? topic in Rev 13:7 notes.

            • Rev 2:7 - He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." '

  2. What the earth dwellers or the followers of the beast/Antichrist will do? How they will be punished?

    1. 10a He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword.

        • (David Guzik) This means that the functionaries of the beast are not without guilt. Though these things are prophesied and part of God’s predetermined plan, it does not lessen in the slightest way man’s personal responsibility. If you work for the beast and lead others into captivity, you certainly shall go into captivity yourself. God will measure unto you what you have measured to others.

            • This may have a secondary or additional meaning: there is no hope in fighting against the Antichrist. The only way of victory is steadfast faith and endurance in Jesus.

        • Matthew 26:51 - And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 52 But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

        • John 18:10-11 - 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"

        • Romans 12:17-21 - 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  1. What should be the response of the saints who go through this extreme persecution?

    1. 10b Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

        • (David Guzik) Though they are viciously attacked by the Antichrist and his followers, the saints of God must keep steadfast faith in the ultimate justice of God. He will reward their persecutors with persecution of His own.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Certainly in John's day, this was meaningful; for every Roman citizen had to acknowledge, "Caesar is Lord." Likewise in every age of the church, true believers have had to take their stand for Christ, come what may.

Application:

God will defend on our behalf in our circumstance. Do as per His leading and keep His standards with His power of the Holy Spirit

Epilog & Summary:

How this beast referred in rest of the scriptures?

    • What is Antichrist means?

        • Antichrist (Greek: antichristos; (500) → anti (473) - instead of or against, and Christos (5547) - Christ, anointed)

        • Antichristos literally an opposer of Christ or against Christ.

  • Where Antichrist is referred and defined in the Bible?

      • This is found only in John's epistles and collectively meaning all who deny that Jesus is the Messiah and that the Messiah is come in the flesh (1 John 2:!8,22; 4:3; 2 John 1:7). We do not know what exactly whom John had in mind, but most probably Jewish opposers to the Messiah-ship of Christ. It occurs nowhere else in the NT.

          • 1 John 2:18 - Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.

          • 1 John 2:22 - Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.

          • 1 John 4:3 - and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

          • 2 John 1:7 - For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

    • Is there any other references in Bible points to this Beast?

        • False christ (Greek: pseudochristos (5580) Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22).

        • Pseudochristos is different from Antichristos. The pseudochristos does not deny the existence of Christ, but takes advantage of the fact of the expectation of the appearance of Christ or one who usurps(to seize and hold a position, office, power, etc. by force or without legal right) the place of Christ. He thus deceives the people in believing that he is "the Christ," whereas the antichrist denies the existence of the true God.

            • Matt 24:24 - 23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be

            • Mark 13:22 - 21 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'Look, He is there!' do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

        • In the OT, we have the intimation of someone who will be opposed to the Lord and His anointed (Ps 2; Ezek 38; 39; Zech 12-14; see Dan 7:8, 20f; 8:24; 11:28,30,36f, which read in conjunction with 2 Thes 2:4 and Rev 13:1-8).

        • Paul's reference to the same person is called "the man of sin," "son of perdition," "wicked one" (anomos (459), lawless) as in 2 Thess 2:3,8.

        • He is the one opposing (antikeimenos (480)) and exalting above God as in 2 Thess 2:4, asserting the fulfillment of God's Word in himself and therefore seeking to establish his own throne.

        • In 2 Thes 2:1-12, Paul asserts that, before the day of Christ (the day of the rapture of the Church described in 1 Thes 4:13-17), there must come first falling away (due rapture all believers who are temple of Holy Spirit are taken up so there will be chaos/lawlessness because God has taken away His Holy Spirit), and the man of sin, the Antichrist, will be revealed. He will sit in the new temple yet to be rebuilt under his own direction during the second three and a half years of the seven-year period of the tribulation. He will demonstrate great satanic power and will perform signs and lying wonders. The lord will slay this Antichrist at His Second coming (Rev 20:10).

        • In 1 John 2:18, attention is drawn to the antichrists already existing and working against Christ, but the real Antichrist whose coming was erroneously expected by the early Church.

        • Rev 17:8 refers to the beast which should be connected with the beast of Dan 7-8.. He claims and wins respect equal to that of God and makes war on God's people. He rules for three and one-half years over the earth and is finally destroyed by the Lord in a great battle.

    • List of names or titles the Bible gives to this beast/Antichrist:

  • Why this beast is called the Antichrist?

      • As we saw so far this beast is the False christ, the Antichrist, the lawless one, the man of sin, the son of perdition,... this beast is sum of all these.

      • But in common most call him as The Antichrist.

      • In Greek anti (473) can be translated as instead of or against. So, Antichrist covers both False and against christ positions and in addition to this he has other characteristics as defined in the various scriptures that we saw above.

      • We can notice that for the Initial 3 ½ Years of last 7 year period he starts as pseudo/false christ deceiving Israelites (John 5:43) and after his fatal wound and healing with Satan's authority he become Antichrist for the remaining 3 ½ Years of last 7 year period (Rev 13-19). He show that by he persecuting and chase Israelites to wilderness and kill all saints that follows Jesus Christ.

          • (Warren Wiersbe) Keep in mind that "the beast" is a counterfeit Christ. The world would not receive Christ, but it will receive Antichrist (John 5:43). The world would not believe the truth, but they will believe the lie (2 Thes. 2:8-12). Jesus spoke (and still speaks) gracious words of salvation, and men turn a deaf ear; but they will listen to the blasphemous words of "the beast." The world will not worship the Christ, but they will bow down to Antichrist.

          • (Warren Wiersbe) In Revelation 17, we will learn that "the beast" rises to power by means of "the harlot," a symbol of the apostate world church. This is not any one denomination or faith, but a world religious system that has rejected God's Son and God's truth. However, when "the beast" rises to universal power, he will no longer need "the harlot" and shall subsequently destroy her and establish his own satanic religion.

  • Are these list matching with the list of events performed by the beast?

    • Yes. Compare these with the following table.

Major events happens through this beast/Antichrist:

False Prophet:

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

  1. From where another beast came?

    1. 11a Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth,

  2. What is his main responsibility?

    1. 12b and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

        • His main responsibility is to lead the people in the world to worship and to promote the first beast/Antichrist and dragon/Satan.

        • (David Guzik) The beast rising from the earth, leads the world to worship the beast and the dragon.

            • It may seem fantastic to some that the world would be led into worship of a man and of the devil. But by nature, men have an undeniable religious impulse, and they also have an undeniable rebellion against God. What men want most is not the elimination of religion, but their own religion. They say they want the kingdom, but they don’t want God in it.

      • Application: Are we using the God given gifts and talents to draw people to God and lead them to worship Him?

  1. In whose authority this false prophet performs his responsibilities? and In whose presence he did all his responsibilities?

    1. 12a And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence

  1. Describe his appearance of this false prophet:

    1. 11b and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon.

      • How this beast looks like? or Is this beast looks like a lamb?

        • This beast horn looks like Lamb but we do not know how this beast looks like.

        • Based on the Lamb like horn this beast may be looks like lamb.

        • Find out any similarities with Dragon/Satan and the Beast/Antichrist.

            • Rev 13:1c-2a - 1c having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. 2a Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion.

            • Rev 12:3 - And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.

            • This beast and the Antichrist is referred as beast (same Greek word thērion (2342) means wild animal) and they both have horns but no crowns to this beast. This beast spoke like dragon (same Greek word drakōn (1404) referees to Satan).

            • (David Guzik) This creature represents someone like the beast rising from the sea, because the same word beast is used to describe them both. At the same time, this beast is different.

                1. They are different in origin, because one comes out of the sea, the other out of the earth.

                2. They are different in rank, because the second is subordinate to the first (causes the earth . . . to worship the first beast, Revelation 13:12)

                3. They are different in appearance, because the second has a mild, “lamb-like” appearance.

        • What his Horn means?

            • Like the Antichrist this horns does not referees to individual king/person. You can find out when you compare this with Horns in Dan 7 & 8. Read the topic What these sign means? topic in Rev 13:1-2a notes.

            • Since this horn is like Lamb's horn so it is small and may not be that powerful but may mean delegated power to this beast.

            • (David Guzik) The two horns may express the fact that this beast has authority in two realms, such as religious and political authority. Or, he may have two horns simply because that’s how many horns lambs have (two horns like a lamb).

      • What is his voice like?

        • 11c spoke like a dragon.

          • We know dragon means Satan. So he speak like Satan Or speak whatever Satan puts in his mouth.

          • (David Guzik) Despite his lamb-like appearance, the message of the second beast is the same as the message of the first beast.

    1. Is he a False Prophet referred by Jesus in Matthew 24:24?

        • Matt 24:24 - 23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be

      • Is there any verse in this passage Rev 13:11-17 referees that this is False Prophet?

        • No

        • Where in the Bible it referees that this is False Prophet?

            • In Rev 16:13; 19:20; 20:10, "the false prophet" is referred

                • Rev 16:13 - 12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.15 "Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame."16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.

                • Rev 19:20 - Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

                • Rev 20:10 - The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

          • In Revelation 19:20 it is clearly points out that this beast is the False prophet.

            • (David Guzik) This second beast is called the false prophet (Revelation 16:13, 19:20, 20:10), as someone distinct from the first beast (the Antichrist) and the dragon (Satan).

            • (Warren Wiersbe) The image of the horns (Rev. 13:11) suggests that the false prophet has authority, but the absence of a crown indicates that his authority is not political. Our Lord warned that there would be false prophets (Matt. 24:11,24). and this one will be the greatest. He will have the "character" of a lamb but the voice of the dragon. What a deceiver he will be and all the world will listen to him!

        • Application: Why this second beast is not referred as false prophet in Rev 13:11-18 but clearly points out in Rev 19:20?

            1. This made us to read the entire Revelation to find out what is this beast name.

                • If we are really believe that this is the Truth from God which is going to happen in future then we will spend time by digging into the Word of God until we find out answers from the bible.

                • In the book of John closely watch Jesus' answer to the questions. We may not understand his answers immediately but if we spend time and dig into the word we will understand the in depth meaning.

                • God want us to spend time with him because He loves us so much.

                • Skim through the Bible and understand the overview of our God at the same time spend time with Him and know the in-depth meaning also.

            2. This shows our Sovereign power of our God. Shows how big our God is.

                • We can notice this how our God reveals the truth about Jesus Christ (Seed) from the beginning:

                  1. in Gen 3:15 during the curse,

                  2. to Abraham

                  3. to Jacob,

                  4. to David,

                  5. to Salomon,

                  6. to Mary & Joseph

                  7. to Apostles

                  8. to all of us.

                • He is God of Abraham, Jacob, David, Salomon, Peter, Paul,... myself.

            3. This shows our God is not bound to time.

            4. This shows and proves that our God is the author of this Bible.

            5. This shows our Bible is valid and applicable to all the age.

    1. When this beast show up? and How long this beast works for the Antichrist?

        • Based on the responsibilities referred in this passage Rev 13:11-18 and the details about him in Rev 19:20 it is clear that he arise at the middle of the last 7 years just before Jesus Christ 2nd coming for 3.5 years.

        • He will arise the same time when the first beast/Antichrist with deadly wound arise miraculously.

        • He work for the first beast/Antichrist. He lead the people in the world to worship and to promote the first beast/Antichrist and dragon/Satan until Jesus comes and throws them to Lake of fire or Hell in Rev 19:20.

What is this second beast's "job description"?

13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

  1. What are all signs and wonders this false prophet performs?

    1. These following events happens simultaneously when the beast/Antichrist make war with saints. Read topic What is really happening during this war? in Rev 13:7 notes.

      1. Did many signs and wonders in the sight of men and the beast/Antichrist.

        1. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.

            • This happens simultaneously when the beast/Antichrist make war with saints. Read topic What is really happening during this war? in Rev 13:7 notes.

            • (Warren Wiersbe) The false prophet, energized by Satan, will perform his "lying wonders" and even duplicate some of the signs performed by the two witnesses (Rev. 13:13: see also Rev 11:5).

            • (David Guzik) The beast rising from the earth has the “signs and wonders” to back up his false teaching. A specific miracle of the false prophet is described: he makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. It is important that John highlights this miracle. In the eyes of the deceived world, it answers the miracle of the two witnesses, who minister during this period and are persecuted by the Antichrist and his false prophet (Rev11:5). To the deceived world, this also puts this false prophet in the class of Elijah (1 Kings 18). We can imagine the false prophet as saying, “Let the true God answer with fire” and then performing his deceptive wonder.

                1. “There is a supernatural power which is against God and truth, as well as one for God and truth. A miracle, simply as a work of wonder, is not necessarily of God. There has always been a devilish supernaturalism in the world, running alongside of the supernaturalism of divine grace and salvation.” (Seiss)

                2. In the days of the Exodus, Aaron performed miracles, and up to a point was matched miracle-for-miracle by the magicians of Egypt (Exodus 7-9).

                3. In Deuteronomy 13:1-5, God assumes there will be supernatural works on behalf of false prophets and idols, and He warns His people to judge a worker of miracles by their message, not only by their works.

                4. Jesus said that some who worked miracles - even in His name - were false followers and would perish in hell (Matthew 7:22-23).

                5. Jesus said that in the end times, false prophets would emerge and show great signs and wonders to deceive (Matthew 24:24).

                6. Paul said that the Antichrist will come with all power, signs, and lying wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9).

      2. Intensity of signs increases to Supernatural Miracle like how God created Adam and breathed on him to life. Like that this beast/False Prophet make image and give life to it

        1. 14b telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

            • This happens simultaneously when the beast/Antichrist make war with saints. Read topic What is really happening during this war? in Rev 13:7 notes.

            • (Warren Wiersbe) Up to this time, the two witnesses have been ministering at the temple in Jerusalem, but "the beast" will slay them and take over the temple. When God raises the two witnesses from the dead and takes them to heaven, the false prophet will answer that challenge by giving life to the image of "the beast." Not only will the image move, but it will speak. His greatest sign will be "the abomination of desolation" mentioned by Daniel (Dan. 9:27: 11:36), Jesus (Matt. 24:15). and Paul (2 Thes. 2:4).

            • What is "the abomination of desolation"?

              • It is the image of "the beast" set up in the temple in Jerusalem. An idol is bad enough: but setting it up in the temple is the height of all blasphemy. Since Satan could not command worship in heaven, he will go to the next best place—the Jewish temple in the Holy City (see Dan. 8:9-14).

            • (David Guzik) The beast rising from the earth will use a deceptive, animated image as the focus point of the worship of the beast.

                1. It may seem strange to us to have the whole world give this kind of worship to the image of a man, but the personality cults of totalitarian governments in the twentieth century are a good example of this kind of worship. All we have to do is remember totalitarian states like the Soviet Union or Communist China, and their omnipresent pictures of Stalin or Mao and we see a pattern that will be ultimately fulfilled by the Antichrist.

                2. The image of the beast is animated in some way; it has breath and can speak. Whether the image is animated supernaturally or technologically, the result will be impressive. The Psalmist mocked idol worshippers because the idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not (Psalm 135:15-16). This image of the Antichrist will be a different kind of idol, because the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

                3. This idolatrous image is what Jesus, Daniel, and Paul spoke of as the abomination of desolation (Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:15, and 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4). It is an idolatrous image set up in the holy place of a rebuilt temple; it is an abomination in the sense of being supreme idolatry, and it is desolation in the sense that it will bring the judgment described by the seals, trumpets, and bowls

                4. This is the summation of the power of the Antichrist, whose authority ends after forty-two months (Revelation 13:5). This marks the halfway point of the final seven years of man’s rule of this planet. The Antichrist’s power ends as soon as it peaks.

        2. Application: Does all miracles originate from God?

          • All these miracles are not originated from God but God allowed this to happen because He is respecter of person.

            • We may started our spiritual life by a miraculous encounter with our God. But do not stay in that level if we stay there then we will not grow but always run too and fro looking for miracles done by others. Eventually our belief depends upon the miracles and we slowly start to believe all miracle doers no mater who does this miracle and where it originates from instead discerning that and identify the source.

                • (David Guzik) Knowing all this, the emphasis on signs and wonders among some Christians is frightening. Some Christians say or think, “You can really know where God is and where His power is by signs and wonders.” Thinking this way is to leave yourself wide open to deception. Years ago there was a large, multi-denominational conference of people who think this way, and their slogan - on a huge banner over the conference platform - read “Unity Under Signs and Wonders.” That’s a unity that Satan, the Antichrist, and the false prophet could all join in. Signs and wonders will be present among Christians, but the real marks of God’s work are love and truth

                • Acts 17 - Evil spirit annoying Paul

                • John 6:26 -

            • So, Know our God in deeper level and know who He is.

              • 2 Peter 1:2 -

              • Dan 3:26 -

    1. Why this false prophet doing all these signs and wonders? or List three main reasons the false prophet doing all these sings and wonders.

        1. To Deceive all peoples, nations, tongues.

        2. 14a And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast,

            • Draw people's attention by deceiving them through this signs and wonders.

        3. To lead all to worship false god Antichrist and Satan.

        4. 12b and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

        5. 15b and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

        6. Make them as Satan's or Antichrist's followers by worshiping him.

            • False Prophet always to leads to False god.

            • (Warren Wiersbe) When our Lord ministered on earth. Jewish leaders often asked Him to perform some sign to prove that He was indeed their Messiah: and Jesus refused. But the false prophet will perform deceptive signs that will lead the world into devil-worship (see 2 Thes. 2:9).

      1. To Seal/Mark all

        1. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

            • Guarantee/Confirms them by marking them.

    1. Can the false prophet deceive those who seek the truth?

        • He cannot deceive those people who seek the truth. If anyone seek the truth will find it because God who watches our heart will reveal that to him.

            • Matt 7:7-8 - 7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

        • He will seal only those who truly worship the beast/Antichrist. Seal is the public declaration/acceptance to their true worship of the beast/Antichrist.

          • Rev 14:9-10 - 9 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."

          • (David Guzik) This reminds us that there is a connection between worshipping the beast and his image and receiving his mark on his forehead or on his hand. No one will “casually” or “accidentally” take the mark. The connection between worshipping the beast and taking the mark will be clear enough.

              • Although, receiving the mark may seem innocent enough to those who dwell on the earth. In their eyes it may not seem like much more that a mere pledge of allegiance and devotion to the Antichrist and his government. It was the same way in the first few centuries of Christianity, when burning a pinch of incense to an image of Caesar, and pledging “Caesar is Lord” was regarded as an innocent act of civic duty to the ancient pagans.

  1. Is this mark of the beast is optional to live on the earth at that time?

    1. 15b and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

    2. 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

        • No, it cost them their life.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Not content to control people through religious deceit, the false prophet will institute strong economic measures as well. Everybody (except believers; Rev. 20:4) will receive a special mark in order to buy or sell; but the only way to get that mark is to submit to "the beast" and worship him. Surely this is a strong allusion to the Caesar worship in the Roman Empire, but this same policy has been used by political leaders throughout history.

  1. Is it possible to erase/undo/remove the mark of the beast? or

  2. Is it possible to enter into the Kingdom of God after receiving the mark of this beast? or

    1. Is it possible to accept our Lord Jesus after receiving the mark of this beast?

      • No.

        • Describe How?

            • Based on the following verses this is a permanent mark.

                • Rev 13:15b and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

                • Rev 14:9-11 - 9 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."

                • Rev 20:4 - And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

          • There is no turning back. Either they get the mark go to hell or beheaded/killed and go to heaven immediately.

    1. Application: Compare this False Prophet work with the work of the Holy Spirit.

        1. Holy Spirit leads all to the Truth.

            • John 16:13 - However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

            • John 18:37 - Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

        2. Holy Spirit leads all to believe in true God and worship Him.

            • John 16:8-11 - 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth.

        3. God seals true believers.

            • What God uses to seal the believers?

                • God seals believers in Christ by His Holy Spirit

                  • Eph 1:13,14 - 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

                • God seals believers in Christ by His Name as in Rev 7:3, 14:1 (similar to Holy Spirit sealing for the believers during Church age) here this false prophet marks their sincere followers with the Antichrist name.

                  • Rev 7:3-4 - 3 saying, "Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads." 4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed:

                  • Rev 14:1 - Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father's name written on their foreheads.

            • How God seals with His Holy Spirit?

                • 1 Cor 6:19-20 - 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.

                • John 3:3-6 - 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

                • Rev 3:20- Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

                • John 14:23 - Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

                • 2 Cor 13:5 - Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you are disqualified.

                • NLT: Romans 8:9 - But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.)

            • Why God seals believers in Christ by His Holy Spirit?

                • Eph 1:14 - 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

                • 2 Cor 1:22 - 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

                • 2 Cor 5:5 - Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

                • John 14:16-18 - 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 19 "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.

                • John 10:27-29 - 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.

  1. Where the mark of the beast marked?

    1. 16b to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads,

  1. Is it a visible, physical, spiritual or symbolic mark?

    1. 16b to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads,

    2. 17b and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

        • Since it is marked either in forehead or right hand this must be physical but not symbolic or spiritual.

        • This can be either visible or invisible. If it is invisible then this can be identifiable by any scanning device.

        • (David Guzik) Since the ancient Greek word for mark (charagma) isn’t generally applied to people, some have taken this as a symbolic mark. But a literal mark, needed to buy or sell, is certainly conceivable and practicable.

        • (David Guzik) Satan is not a creative being, all he can do imitate God. We are not surprised to find that this too is a Satanic parody of something God will do; it imitates God’s mark upon his people (Revelation 7:3-4).

  1. Can this mark be our Social Security Number, Voter ID, Passport?

    1. 17b and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

        • No. This mark is not our ID. It is Antichrist mark, name or number equivalent of his name.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) This much is sure: in recent years, we have seen a worldwide increase in the use of numbers for identification. In the United States, a person's Social Security number is indispensable. In fact, numbers are more important to computers than names! Perhaps this is an advance warning of what will happen on earth when "the beast" is in control.

  1. Why the False Prophet marks? What is the first and second beast's economic strategy?

    1. 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

        • (David Guzik) Under the government of the beast and his associate, all will be given a mark. Without the mark, one will not be able to participate in the economy (no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark of his name).

        • This is mark is to bring the Antichrist followers not to heaven but to torment eternally in Hell/Lake of Fire.

    2. How the False Prophet marks?

        • He may use any permanent marker to mark a visible mark similar to tattoo.

        • (David Guzik) The technology to give people a mark that enables them to buy and sell in the electronic economy is available. There are many different ways it could happen.

            • One interesting possibility from a company named Applied Digital Solutions, which is developing a product called “Digital Angel.”

            • Digital Angel™ is a microchip implanted in the body powered by the body’s own biomechanical electricity and able to communicate with satellites.

            • This is from a real, legitimate company whose stock is traded on major exchanges. The company plans a significant test of their technology in October 2000.

            • In a press release, Digital Angel’s Dr. Peter Zhou commented: “I’m particularly excited about Digital Angel’s ability to save lives by remotely monitoring the medical conditions of at-risk patients and providing emergency rescue units with the person’s exact location.

            • I also see great potential for Digital Angel in the area of ‘location-aware’ e-commerce. This is a whole new wireless and Web-enabled frontier in which a purchaser’s actual location is integral to making a successful sale or providing a valuable, location-critical service.” It isn’t hard to see how this kind of “mark” can become commonplace, simply as the logical step in the course of the electronic economy.

            • Digital Angel’s slogan is also interesting: “Digital Angel: Technology that Cares.”

  1. What is the major difference between God's seal and the mark of the beast?

    1. God's seal is spiritual and the mark of the beast is physical/literal. Holy Spirit/God lives within us at the same time Satan's mark is physical/literal mark.

  1. Why can't False Prophet mark like how God seals? or Why False Prophet uses the physical/literal mark on their followers?

    1. God's seal His Holy Spirit is omnipresent (everywhere) but Satan or his angels (demons) are not omnipresent to live within their followers. Satan can send demons to posses each of their followers as seal but he may not have enough demons to do that.

What is the name or number of the beast/Antichrist?

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

  • What is this number means?

    • 18b for it is the number of a man: His number is 666

        • What is the number of a man?

            • (Warren Wiersbe) Since man was created on the sixth day, six is the number of man. Creation was made for man and likewise has the number six stamped on it: twenty-four hours to a day (4 x 6), twelve months to a year (2 x 6). Seven is the number of perfection and fullness, but six is the "human number." just short of perfection.

        • Number 7 means completion/perfection because God created the heavens and earth, competed the task and rested.

        • Number 8 means new beginnings because God resurrected on 1st day of the week.

        • This was a common concept in the ancient world. In Greek (and Hebrew as well), letters were assigned a numerical value, such as “A” equaling 1, “B” equaling 2, and so forth. You can get the alpha numeric equivalent chart from http://www.greaterthings.com/Word-Number/Methods/HebrewGreekEnglish.htm

        • Using this Jesus in Greek: Iesous = I (10) + e (8) + s (200) + o (70) + u (400) + s (200) = 888

        • (Warren Wiersbe)

            • This special mark is the name or number of "the beast"—the mystical 666. In the ancient world, the letters of the alphabet were used for numbers, both in Greek and Hebrew: and Bible students have been attempting for years to unravel the mystery of this name and number. If you work at it hard enough, almost any name will fit!

            • An antichristian system pervades our world, and true believers must not be a part of it (1 John 2:15-17). We must shun false worship (1 Cor. 10:14-22), that we may be found faithful to the Lord in these last days! ! (2 Tim. 3)

        • (David Guzik)

            1. The letters of “Jesus” in Greek add up to 888. 666 may be a Satanic counterpart to the name of Jesus, or 666 may be God’s evaluation of such a Satanic counterpart - it falls short.

                • As compared to the number 888, the number 666 may signify an unholy trinity. It may be a human and demonic imitation of God, inherently falling short of the perfect and true. Seven is the number of completion and totality, and 6 doesn’t quite make it.

            2. Or, the number 666 may harken back to Solomon’s wages. 1 Kings 10:14 says that Solomon received yearly six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold. Perhaps this suggests that the Antichrist, like Solomon, is a good man who becomes corrupted.

                • Modern interpretations of the idea of the Antichrist are full of the idea of some demon-child, marked by obvious evil from his birth, such as in the Omen movies. But the Antichrist may be someone whose evil is only seen after his rise to power.

            3. Christians need not fear the number 666 in a superstitious way; but it interesting to see the way the world has an attachment to this number - even with things like “666” brand cough syrup.

    • Is it possible to figure out who the beast is by using this numerical value of a name that adds up to 666?

    • 18a Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast,

        • (David Guzik) Using this method, many candidates for Antichrist have been suggested through the ages, such as the Pope or the Papacy, John Knox, Martin Luther, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and so forth. But the schemes for unlocking the number of the beast are as confusing as they are endless.

            1. “That as 12, the square root of 144, is God’s number, so 25 is the square root of antichrist’s number 666; and by this enigmatical expression we are taught that antichrist should be a political body, that should as much affect the number 15, as God seemeth to have his church affected the number 12.” (Poole)

            2. Some commentators observe that there are six Roman numerals (I, V, X, L, C, and D). If you add them all up, you get 666. Some take this to say that the Antichrist will be a Roman. Or, they point out that all the numbers from 1 to 36 add up to 666. Beast in the evil sense appears 36 times in the Bible.

        • (Warren Wiersbe) Despite all man's imaginative calculations, we must confess that no one knows the meaning of this number and name. No doubt believers on earth at that time will understand it dearly. The "satanic trinity" cannot claim the number seven; it must settle for 666.

      • But people who live during this period can identify and confirm the Antichrist once he appear.

(David Guzik) The two beasts are Satanic imitations. We are presented with a false “Christ” and a false “John the Baptist” who promotes the false Christ. Satan can’t create, but he can effectively deceive with imitation.

    1. “Imitations have ever formed the gravest perils in the history of the Church and the world, and the devil’s final attempt to gain the government of the race will thus be an appalling attempt to imitate.” (Morgan)

    2. Imitations work precisely because they are similar; if they were so obviously different, it would be easy to tell the difference. We must beware and be familiar with the genuine.

    3. Instead of obsessing with fear and interest about the imitation - the Antichrist - how much more appropriate is it for Christians to be interested in the genuine: Jesus Christ.

What role does Dragon/Satan, the Beast and False Prophet play here?

    • If you closely watch their role and responsibilities you can notice the imitation of our Triune Nature of our God called Tri-unity or Trinity.

        • What is Trinity? Why Trinity is important to Christians?

        • You can find more details about this in the Trinity article.

    • False/Unholy/Satanic Trinity:

        1. The Dragon/Satan plays the role of our God the Father.

          • Like how God the Father gave authority to Jesus Christ here Satan gives his authority to this beast

              • John 12:49 - For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

        2. This Beast plays the role of Jesus Christ

            1. by his mortal/deadly wound in his head healed and came back to life instead of dying. This is similar to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

            2. by acknowledging Satan/Dragon as God/Boss/Guru like how Jesus acknowledges God the Father. Because of this earth dwellers will worship Dragon/Satan as in Rev 13:4a.

                • (Warren Wiersbe) Just as Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. so "the beast" will be Satan in a human body (see John 13:2. 27).

                  • Keep in mind that "the beast" is a counterfeit Christ.

                  • The world would not receive Christ, but it will receive Antichrist (John 5:43).

                  • The world would not believe the truth, but they will believe the lie (2 Thes. 2:8-12). Jesus spoke (and still speaks) gracious words of salvation, and men turn a deaf ear; but they will listen to the blasphemous words of "the beast."

                  • The world will not worship the Christ, but they will bow down to Antichrist.

        1. False Prophet plays the role of the Holy Spirit - Rev 13:12-15

            • John 16:7-9,13-15 - 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; ... 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

            • (Warren Wiersbe) One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Christ and lead people to trust and worship Him (John 16:7-15). The false prophet will point to Antichrist and his image and compel people to worship Satan through "the beast."

    • (Warren Wiersbe) The dragon or Satan is the counterfeit Father ("I will be like the Most High"), "the beast" is the counterfeit Christ, and the false prophet is the counterfeit Holy Spirit. This completes the satanic trinity.

    • (David Guzik) With the dragon, the beast rising from the sea, and the beast rising from the land we have an unholy trinity. The dragon is the anti-Father, the beast rising from the sea is the anti-Christ, and the beast rising from the land is the anti-Holy Spirit.
